The carved sandstone boulder is a memorial to SHAHAB KARGARIAN. Shahab was a young man who was visiting Greenwich, an area he loved for the peace and beauty of Greenwich Point, when, on the night of October 8th 2000, he was confronted by armed robbers and shot dead. The community was deeply shocked by the event and has worked with the Kargarian family to establish a memorial to Shahab which gives a strong message of peace and unity. The inscription on the sandstone memorial reads: “O’ friend, in the garden of thy
heart a Baha’i saying chosen by the family to reflect their faith and hopes for everyone’s future. The carving is of a Persian Rose symbolic of the Kargarian’s family heritage. The memorial was designed and coordinated by Robyn Cunningham, Landscape Designer, and sculpted by Chris Bennetts, of Ishi Buki Sandstone Sculptures, in Sydney sandstone. Lane Cove Council has kindly given permission for establishing the memorial in Shell Park and has been supportive at every stage of its development. Over 200 people including the Kargarian family, friends of the family, locals from Greenwich/Lane Cove/Willoughby and the designer and sculptor, attended the dedication of the memorial at: 12 noon on Wednesday October 8th 2003 For enquiries please contact: |
